After graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Hispanic Studies from the University of Puerto Rico in 1986, René Grullón devoted himself to working professionally in libraries and bookselling. He worked at the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture and at the library of the UPR School of Architecture, as well as at several bookstores in San Juan and at the company Melchor Ediciones (Libros en Venta). René started his company Libros de Barlovento in 1992. He has been a member of the Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials, known as SALALM, since 1994.

Darlene Hull earned her Bachelor's degree in Spanish from Bard College in 1979 after two years of study in Mexico. She completed her Master's degree in Library Science from the University of Kentucky in 1982. She worked as Curator of the Special Collections of Hispanic History and Culture and as Specialist Librarian for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the University of Connecticut Library from 1982 to 2005. Darlene began working at Libros de Barlovento in 2005. She has been an active member of the Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials, known as SALALM, since 1984 and served as President of the organization in 2002/2003.
